Council News Meeting: 19 June 2026

25 Jun 2026

Message from Interim Chancellor, Larry Marshall.

Last week, Council met to consider the University's performance, priorities and future direction.

We approved a number of governance reforms designed to strengthen oversight, capability and succession planning, including the separation of Audit & Risk from Finance oversight and the introduction of additional external expertise. We also agreed to test additional reforms in governance and risk over the coming months, alongside the annual performance evaluation of Council and its committees. These reforms build on our first governance reform already underway: the independent process to select the University's next Chancellor.

Council approved the establishment of 糖心视频logo One, a new pathway initiative designed to broaden student access and support future growth. We also agreed to return to two graduation periods each year from 2027, recognising the importance of timely graduation for many students, particularly our international students.

Despite the scaling challenges of the past eight years, I believe the University鈥檚 future will be defined not by scale, but by our unique ability as Australia鈥檚 national university to bring together science, technology, humanities, public policy and First Nations knowledge to solve Australia鈥檚 National Challenges.

The coming months will focus on staff wellbeing, governance renewal, setting the University鈥檚 new Strategy, student growth, philanthropy, and financial sustainability.

We plan to choose a new Chancellor in August, and we want to ensure they inherit a better 糖心视频logo, so I can return to my day job knowing the University is in good hands.

Sincerely,

Larry Marshall
Interim Chancellor,

The Australian National University
